A Gartner analyst predicts the demise of the computer mouse in the next three to five years.
Taking over will be so called gestural computer mechanisms like touch screens and facial recognition devices.

The K Desktop Environment community came out earlier this year with their brand new KDE 4.0 release that marked significant advancements to this open-source desktop environment compared to its KDE 3.5.x code-base. Meanwhile, the GNOME community has been living in a 2.0 cycle for quite some time with no signs of a major overhaul, but their six-month release cycles just continue to deliver new refinements and minor improvements. The plans for GNOME 3.0 just put this release out when there is significant API/ABI breakage to GNOME 2.0 / GTK+ or a major rewrite. Well, in addition to announcing Stormy Peters joining GNOME, at GUADEC 2008 they have just announced plans for GNOME 3.0!

Online scammers are expected to latch on to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, opening in a month’s time, in a bid to lure unsuspecting victims, a new security report has revealed.
Symantec’s latest State of Spam monthly report (PDF) highlighted a series of messages that purport to be from the “Beijing Olympic Committee”. The official title of the body tasked to oversee the upcoming Olympics is the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad or BOCOG.

A lot of us block YouTube access in our schools. There’s plenty of objectionable content worth hiding from young eyes. Probably an equal number of us, however, leave it open at the request of teachers who use its vast resources for teaching (yes, there is more than zit popping and skate videos on YouTube) or because it’s an easy way for kids to share content they create at home and at school.
The viewing log, which will be handed to Viacom, contains the log-in ID of users, the computer IP address (online identifier) and video clip details.
While the legal battle between the two firms is being contested in the US, it is thought the ruling will apply to YouTube users and their viewing habits everywhere.

Mozilla has officially made history with a new Guinness world record for the largest number of software downloads in a 24-hour period.
The final record breaking 8,002,530 downloads for web browser Firefox 3.0 took place in June.

While Firefox 3 is a great browser with features that I really liked, the problem right now is compatibility with Firefox 2 plugins/addons.
