MANILA, Philippines — A three-year-old training program developed in the Philippines by Sun Microsystems in tandem with local academicians has attracted about 12 percent of the local universities and tertiary schools in the country, executives said.
About 273 schools out of 1,600 universities and tertiary schools are now members of the Java Education and Development Initiative (JEDI) of Sun Microsystems, said Matt Thompson, director of Sun Developer Network and Open Source Programs Office of Sun Microsystems.

BOSTON (Reuters)—Red Hat’s new chief executive said on Friday that the company will continue to pursue a business model under which it makes its software available at no cost and makes money selling services to businesses.
“We are a mission-based company. Democratizing information is a social good,” Chief Executive James Whitehurst said in an interview with Reuters. “We will be open source. We will be the leader in open source.”
Last month he was named CEO of Red Hat, the world’s largest publicly held developer of open source software.

MANILA, Philippines–Microsoft Philippines is set to open a “satellite” open source network lab in the country soon, local executives said in a briefing.
Although declining to give details, the local executives said the Microsoft open source network lab will test the interoperability of the company’s products, including the new operating system Vista, with other environments
More details will be revealed in the next two to three months, Albert Dela Cruz, platform strategy manager of Microsoft Philippines, said in a briefing.
