Dell Begins Ubuntu 8.04 Pre-installs
Author: adminJul 25
It’s finally official. Dell’s Ubuntu Linux PCs now come with the latest build of the operating system, version 8.04. That may not seem like news, but it’s actually a significant move by Dell. Here’s why.
Microsoft recently began its latest Windows Vista offensive, this time trying to assure partners and customers that they can migrate to Vista with confidence. Sure, Dell supports Vista — but the PC giant also supports customer choice.
Dell began offering Ubuntu on selected consumer PCs about a year ago. The VAR Guy has one (and, full disclosure, he loves it). But this is the year that Ubuntu was supposed to move from geek users to a broader set of consumers — thanks to the release of Ubuntu 8.04 in April 2008.

It is still Microsoft that dominates the OS market and most are unfamiliar with Linux. Rarely can you see someone with a Linux laptop on a public transport and if ever you found one, most likely people around him will get curious.

I know there’s a tab feature for gnome-terminal but I prefer terminal displayed side-by-side which is faster to navigate than in tabbed mode.

Author: adminApr 18
The next red-letter day for Ubuntu fans will be April 24, when Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Long Term Support) arrives. Mark Shuttleworth, the CEO of Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, guarantees that the next version of the popular Linux distribution will make it on time, with something for enterprise, desktop, and Internet users.
In an interview, Shuttleworth made the point that, while many executives have yet to realize it, “Open source software projects and Linux distros are actually better than proprietary companies at hitting deadlines.” In particular, Shuttleworth says, “Companies are now comparing Linux with Vista, and it’s clear that’s Linux does a better job of meeting people’s expectations.

In the latest Ubuntu weekly newsletter the Ubuntu folks announced the release of the Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop Course. The modular course should take two days to complete all 10 of the lessons offered, but it is possible to cover topics and lessons independently of each other, learning whatever is of interest.
